Music Performance: Instrumental Major (MUIJ)

The Bachelor of Music - Music Performance: Instrumental Major is a professional degree for performers of Brass, Percussion, String, or Woodwind instruments. Admission to this program is by audition. No minor is required.

I. WMU Essential Studies (37 hours)


II. Major Area of Concentration (34 hours)


Includes Applied Music and Performance Ensembles

Applied Music (24 hours)


A total of 24 credit hours of Applied Music on your major instrument. The minimum number of total credit hours for each level is designated below. (Note: Sections designated for performance majors are three credits each semester.)

Performance Ensembles (10 hours)


Major Ensemble (4 hours)


Students are required to complete four semesters of a major ensemble on their primary instrument (placement by audition):

Chamber Music (2 hours)


A total of two credits hours selected from the following. Must be on the student’s primary instrument.

Ensemble Electives (4 hours)


Remaining ensembles electives may be selected from the following:

III. General Music Studies (40 hours)


Basic Music (12 hours)


Aural Skills (3 hours)


Musicology (9 hours)


Keyboard Fundamentals (2 hours)


Conducting (1 hour)


Composition (4 hours)


Upper-level History/Theory (4 hours)


A minimum of 4 hours total, with at least 2 hours selected from the following list of Music History/Literature electives:

Music Cognate Electives (5 hours)


Selected from any MUS course for which the student meets the course prerequisites. MUS 1000:5999 (excluding MUS 1500, MUS 1590, MUS 4500)

Music Clearance (0 hours)


IV. Free Electives to make a minimum of 122 semester credit hours
